What Format Do My Files Need to Be In?

Learn which file formats Bookvault accepts, how to prepare your files for print and what to do if your book is currently in Microsoft Word.

All files uploaded to Bookvault for printing need to be supplied as digital, print-ready PDF files.

Bookvault doesn't accept Microsoft Word documents as print files, so Word documents will need to be exported or converted to PDF before uploading.

Which PDF format should I use?

When preparing your print-ready files, exporting your PDF using either of the following standards should help ensure your files are suitable for print:

  • PDF/X-1a:2001
  • PDF/X-3:2002

These PDF standards are designed for professional print production.

Can I upload a Microsoft Word document?

No. Microsoft Word documents aren't accepted as print files.

If you've created your book in Word, you'll need to export or convert your document to a PDF before uploading it to Bookvault.

I would remove the existing third-party FreePDFConvert recommendation rather than carrying it into the main article. Users can export/save a Word document as a PDF without us sending them to an unrelated third-party conversion website.

Do my files need to be digital?

Yes. Bookvault is a digital, self-service platform, so your book files need to be supplied digitally as PDFs.

Are templates available?

Yes. Bookvault provides templates to help you correctly prepare your cover and interior files based on your book specifications.

Templates can be downloaded through Bookvault and supplied in PDF format.
