What Should I Do If I Believe I’m Exempt From US Tax?
Find out when you may be exempt from tax on Bookvault US orders and how to provide an exemption certificate for validation.
There are circumstances where you may not need to pay tax on purchases from Bookvault.
One of the most common is when you're acting as a reseller purchasing books from Bookvault before selling them on to your own customers. Other exemptions may apply depending on your circumstances.
When might I be exempt?
You may potentially qualify for an exemption if:
- You're purchasing books for resale and the appropriate tax will be applied when you sell them to your customer.
- You're asking Bookvault to dropship directly to a customer in a state where your own sales haven't triggered economic nexus.
- You're purchasing on behalf of an eligible state government institution.
- You're a qualifying charitable organisation or other non-profit body.
Whether you're eligible will depend on your individual circumstances and the relevant state requirements.
How do I claim a tax exemption?
You'll need to provide Bookvault with an appropriate exemption certificate obtained from your state tax authority.
If you believe you're exempt and already have an exemption certificate, raise a support ticket with Bookvault:

Bookvault will then arrange for Avalara to contact you so that you can upload your certificate for validation.
Once Bookvault and Avalara have a validated exemption certificate on file, tax won't be applied to qualifying purchases.
How do I complete my exemption certificate?
Bookvault has a separate guide covering the CertExpress process, including uploading existing resale certificates, using the certificate wizard and completing certificates correctly.

The guide also covers the information you'll need to provide and what to do for states participating in the Streamlined Sales Tax scheme.
What if I'm unsure whether I'm exempt?
Tax exemptions can vary depending on the state and your individual circumstances.
If you're unsure about your tax liability or believe tax has been applied incorrectly, you should speak with your accountant or tax adviser for clarification.
