How Does Bookvault Calculate the Correct US Tax Rate?

Find out how Bookvault calculates the correct tax on US orders and how Avalara determines the rate based on the product, location and customer.

Bookvault works with tax technology provider Avalara to calculate the appropriate tax on applicable US orders.

Avalara is integrated with both the Bookvault and The Great British Bookshop platforms, allowing the appropriate tax to be calculated automatically.

What determines the tax charged?

The calculation takes into account:

  • Product type
  • Location
  • Nature of the customer

These factors are used to determine whether tax applies and the appropriate rate for the transaction.

Why can the rate vary?

There isn't one tax rate that applies to every US Bookvault order.

Rates can vary between states and even between locations within the same state because state and local taxes can combine. The tax treatment of different products and services can also vary between states.

The delivery destination is particularly important. For example, if an author orders a book but has it delivered directly to a customer in another state, the applicable tax is based on the destination of the book.

What if I believe the tax is incorrect?

If you believe you qualify for a tax exemption, you may need to provide an appropriate exemption certificate.
