Does Bookvault Provide Free ISBNs?

Find out whether Bookvault provides free ISBNs, how much a Bookvault Publishing ISBN costs and when you can use a free Dummy ISBN instead.

Bookvault does not provide free registered ISBNs for books that you want to distribute through retailers and bookshops.

If you need a registered ISBN, you can publish your book through Bookvault Publishing. The current cost of a Bookvault Publishing project, including one of Bookvault's ISBNs, is £24.95.

Can I get a free Dummy ISBN?

If you only want to sell your book through:

  • Your own website
  • The Great British Bookshop

you don't need a registered ISBN.

Instead, Bookvault can generate a Dummy ISBN when you set up your title.

A Dummy ISBN is a 13-digit identifier used within the Bookvault system. It isn't a registered ISBN for retail distribution and isn't added to the printed book.

Does creating a title with a Dummy ISBN cost anything?

A Dummy ISBN itself isn't an additional ISBN purchase.

Instead, the normal title setup cost applies. Depending on your Bookvault plan or any applicable promotion, the current title setup cost may be:

  • £19.95
  • £4.95
  • Free

What if I want to sell through Amazon or other retailers?

If you want Bookvault to distribute your book through its wider retail network, including retailers such as Amazon, Alibris or Gardners, you'll need a properly published and registered ISBN.

 Can I use an ISBN I've bought elsewhere?

Yes. You don't have to obtain your ISBN through Bookvault Publishing.

For example, Bookvault can use and distribute ISBNs obtained through Bowker, provided the information you submit to Bookvault matches the information registered with Bowker. Mismatched information can cause retailer listings to be rejected.
