Why Is My Book Cover or Spine Slightly Misaligned?

During book production, a small amount of movement can occur when the cover is printed, trimmed and bound.

This means the position of your cover artwork or spine may vary slightly from the supplied file, even when your artwork has been correctly prepared.

Why can my spine appear off-centre?

Small manufacturing tolerances during printing and binding can cause the spine artwork to move slightly to either side.

This can be more noticeable on designs with:

• Text positioned very close to the edge of the spine
• Strong colour changes between the spine and covers
• Borders or other elements that rely on very precise alignment

How should I design my cover?

When preparing your cover artwork, allow for a small amount of movement during production.

Avoid positioning important design elements where a slight shift would make the finished cover look noticeably incorrect.
